A powerful and beautifully written personal chronicle of family, identity resurrection and the tremendous contribution of one man's force in the early Civil Rights movement. This book should be required classroom reading to promote understanding of the powerful impact and important role exemplar leaders have had on the American struggle for Civil Rights. Additionally, a testament on the author's own progression of understanding her Father and the healing nature of turning ghosts into allies as stated by her sister in the foreword of this book.

This book was a page turner as it was a very transparent and honest view inside Dr. Shade's experience. I loved how she paid homage to her mother and step-father while sharing her true feelings of longing for the unknown. What a remarkable story of this "unspoken" civil rights icon. We know there are so many other out there that worked to better our community, but we can now call Mr. Newsome by name and thank him for his dedication to the path of righteousness as he worked on behalf of our community. This can only be an open door to greater knowledge. Thank you Dr. Shade for sharing your heart.

“The idea of a marvelous life-altering discovery is intriguing because it hardly ever occurs for most people. After a successful career as a Psychologist and Supervisor in Urban Education, Dr. Clarencia Shade lost her beloved mother and subsequently began a quest to learn about the biological father she barely knew due to her parents’ divorce and his early death. Her dedicated search led to this inspirational and compelling story of her exceptional father’s career, and the quest for education and purpose that binds together both sides of this exceptional African American family. Dr. Shade’s book entrances with a story that allows us to vicariously experience her personal journey, and a reminder of the undeniable influence of genes.”

“It is my pleasure to endorse this wonderful piece of history, Outspoken, Clarence W. Newsome, Esq. A Civil Rights Champion: A Daughter’s Reflections, by my friend and fellow yoke bearer, Claricia Newsome-Shade. Mr. Newsome, a historical icon shared information that every Black American and lover of our history should revere. His legal mind and career make us proud to be Black, educated and compassionate in an America filled with strife, inequality, and injustice. It was my pleasure to teach vocal music in the Plainfield Public School District for nearly 30 years. Although music was the focal point, I did my best to share our history and to create a yearning for this knowledge. Each year we celebrated Kwanzaa, Black History Month and gained a greater respect for Kwanzaa's 7 principles.
This book should be in every library that teaches our history. In addition, the mission statement of my choir, Jubilation, includes educating the community regarding our history and rich heritage. Again, this book is a must for every member, as we strive to permeate our surroundings with the greatness of Black Americans. I applaud Clare for her strength in sharing this wonderful work which informs the public of tremendous historical accounts. Her courage is commendable. To GOD be the glory for the great things we do and witness!”

“Hail to Dr. Shade for bringing this civil rights titan to the forefront of our collective consciousness in this compelling biography. Clarence W. Newsome's obscurity does not match the enormity of his contributions to the cause of eradicating racial segregation and injustice. Her treatment of the Richmond 34 case is particularly riveting. Yet, there's even more to this book than this civil rights pioneer's gallant fight for racial justice, for there is also the personal side of a daughter chronicling the life of her father, and in doing so, connecting with him, which even further elevates the significance of the the telling of this story.”
